Writing about food is tough and complicated, especially when you have bad experience. If the place is small, you are a bully. If the place is popular, you are an attention seeker or a pest. Anyway, I will take the risk. Last evening, we had to take an old friend from US for dinner. The friend is not new to India but wanted Indian food. I was confused between Kathputli and Lahori Gate, both being very close to where I live. Eventually, we discussed all…Continue Reading “Shiv Sagar, Janpath”

Malcha Marg is a location that raises a lot of expectations. The restaurants that have been and that are there have all set the bar a little high. Schengen which is a deli, bistro and pub in one does nothing to minimize those standards. You enter the restaurant and immediately notice the tastefully done interiors. The first floor is a deli, the second floor is a bistro and the third floor is a pub. They all share the same design aesthetics – minimalist white interiors…Continue Reading “Schengen Deli, Malcha Marg, Chanakyapuri”

Writing about food, despite all the fun, is a very stressful task. What if your taste buds are born askew, what if you sound biased or uninitiated, what if your reader arrives on the restaurant’s bad day, what if your writing is uninteresting, what about the typos, what if you lack the palate or the knowledge, what if you have no influence, what if you really gain influence and can’t do justice…. Most days are about one or the other above. Then there are days…Continue Reading “Neung Roi – Radisson Blu Plaza, Mahipalpur, Delhi”

My search for the best navratra thali has led me to quite a few interesting places. If the thali at Punjab Grill was an outstanding experience, the one at Shraman, Ashoka Hotel was an average fare. Last night, we headed out to Sattviko, which was closes to what you can call a Indian fast food restaurant. Set up on the quick service format, the restaurant has an innovative menu such as Sabudana Poha, Spinach Quesadillas and Chilled Melonn Salad etc, apart from regular offerings such…Continue Reading “Navratra at Sattviko, Greater Kailash”

It was the first night of rain in Delhi. The weather gods were doing everything to make up for the preceding dry months. I was invited to place which had rave reviews and quite impressive interiors. Their Zomato listing had got me interested and I expected a rainy night will result in an empty restaurant which is awesome for photography. We reached at Diggin in the middle of the downpour. They are spread over two floors that can seat around a hundred. Right at the…Continue Reading “Diggin Café, Anand Lok”

When I recollect my time in the Delhi University a decade back, there wasn’t much in terms of food. Days on which dal in the hostel was a little too runny, we would pile up on a rickshaw and head out to Majnu Ka Tila (Tee Dee or Wongdhen House), Vijay Nagar (Zee’s Chicken) or Kamla Nagar (Momo’s Point). Hudson Lines didn’t have much in terms of food then, just parathas. These days, both the north and south campuses are choc a bloc with fun…Continue Reading “Woodbox Café, Satyaniketan”

Rajouri Garden has been coming closer to Delhi for last few years. From being a distant satellite spot to a plausible evening destination, it has become the coolest hangout place in Western Delhi. In fact, if the food is good, I may give South Delhi an occasional miss. One such occasion came in the form of California Boulevard recently. One of the few themed restaurants in Delhi, California Boulevard is replete with insignia from the city that it is named after. The entrance is a…Continue Reading “The California Boulevard, Rajouri Garden”

In one of my earlier reviews, I had mentioned why it is so difficult to write reviews for places in Old Delhi. It is so appropriate that I am going to quote it here. Moti Mahal is probably the second most loved place in Old Delhi, second only to Karim’s. It beats Karim’s at accessibility and ambiance, though. It is on the main road, you can park in front, on the other side. Uniformed guards will receive you and show you in. Unlike other restaurants…Continue Reading “Moti Mahal – Daryaganj”
