Valarmathi Mess and Caterers

All that you wanted to try in Coimbatore can be tried here. Biryani, Pallipalayam, Kalakki – they are all there. I loved the mutton biryani. There is a chicken and a mutton gravy on the table. They are complementary and come in big steel mugs. The raita is replenished before you can finish what’s on the plate. Like all places in Coimbatore, has an AC and a non-AC section.

The Pallipalayam was nice. Though, I found the Kalakki a little eggy. It is interesting for sure and is loved widely but I will have to try elsewhere and see if someone can make a better version.

I enter the restaurant. Can’t make up my mind. Send menu screenshots to my wife. I decide on mutton biryani, she recommends Kongu naaru chicken curry. The biryani was mind-blowing. But the chicken curry was so new and such a surprise, I can’t remember the biryani now. It was spicy, creamy, rich yet to mild on the tongue that it remains a mystery to me. Will have to read up the recipe.

This outlet had an exterior that does not prepare for you for the interior. The grandness of the interior does not prepare you for the food prices. And, something about south indians and their appetite. Each guy was having rice on one meal that could feed Europe for a year. The thali that can not be covered in one shot was just 110 bucks.

The Grand Regent, Coimbatore

I landed in Coimbatore without knowing about GD Naidu. I should have known of him anyway. But to land in his city and not know of him is criminal. Especially, when he has such a big footprint on the city. Anyway, colleagues wanted take me out for drinks and they chose this place. An old private property now a hotel.

It was a starred property and a splendid one. The bar was nice too. What shocked me is that beer prices were same as some of the shady bars I saw in the city. What shocked me again is when the colleague asked me to wait for the free snacks. All restocked before they were over. All that free with beer that was priced at 300 for 650 ml bottles.
