Baba Ka dhaba and drone charity in times of apathy

Categories Opinion

Okay. One does not have to point at the other side of everything. But I feel compelled to, so will try not to change.

India is filled with great people. Baba cries on camera. There are folks at his shop and Zomato adds them and my LinkedIn is full of it etc etc. India is kind, generous, jannat.

A fruit sellers fruits are looted. Someone floats his account number. Money flows like water.

When we were collecting groceries for Delhi riot victims, many did contribute. Wasn’t as viral and popular on LinkedIn as this but that’s okay. You see when it comes to charity, there is something called RoI. Small acts of kindness with big returns in terms of feel goodery.

All of us need to feel good about us. And, we find easy ways to do it. Social sharing is the easiest. It gives us the feel of being part of a community. Low investment, high returns.

On the other hand, there are instances where sharing, helping calls for bigger investments. Like supporting someone from another religion, another caste, speaking against someone powerful, speaking where one exposes oneself to harm, instances where it takes more time than a few minutes or a day.

Once the investment goes up, ROI becomes suspect. Because your gratification now depends on other’s long term welfare. From helicopter dropping to being on the ground. Like US in Afghanistan. Drone charity vs. feet on ground.

To put feet on ground, you need to change as a person. Respect all religions, all castes, all genders.

And, that’s why in India, we see such high instances of drone charity and such indifference to communalism and caste atrocities.
